Read Across American Day - March 1

Read Across America Day, which marks the birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, is an annual reading awareness event that aims to help every child develop a love of books and reading. If you're looking for a memorable selection to recommend to a young reader for this year's Read Across America Day on March 1, consider The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. Winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal, The One and Only Ivan is narrated by a laid-back gorilla. Ivan enjoys life at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. He makes friends with an elderly elephant named Stella and a stray dog named Bob, and sometimes he gets to watch TV. But when Ruby, a new baby elephant, arrives, Ivan rethinks his position on cage living and embarks on a journey of freedom for himself and for Ruby. This award-winning book will move and inspire young readers (and older ones, too).
What will you read Friday March 1?
