Celebrate Black History Month

Since 1976, Black History Month has been observed in the U.S. and Canada every February. In honor of Black History Month, this month we’re shining a spotlight on the talents of some great African-American authors and their recent titles. While not all are historically based or specifically about the African-American experience, each offer a unique perspective and highlight the wide array of genres and topics that are covered by authors of all races.

Zone One (eAudio Book)by Colson Whitehead: Zombies? Check. Post-apocalyptic vision of America? Check. A mixture of horror and thought-provoking narrative? Check. Acclaimed author Colson Whitehead puts a fresh spin on the ‘zombie’ genre with his most recent novel that I have not been able to stop reading. While not as action driven as some may expect, it’s reflective and engaging as a form of social commentary.

Looking for a fun “guilty pleasure”? What about a steamy love story, just in time for Valentine’s Day, by AlTonya Washington or Brenda Jackson?  Those interested in the urban fiction genre may want to read Heartbreak of a Hustler’s Wife (eBook), where NiKi Turner continues her Hustler’s series with a story of family man and preacher, Des – who also happens to be the head of a crime ring. His estranged daughter, Desember, comes to join the family and brings her own baggage, including a pension for robbery, selling stolen goods and dating bad boys. The titular Hustler’s Wife Yarni is a lawyer, trying to keep her family together as they are surrounded by drama and violence. Other popular titles from Nikki Turner include Black Widow (eBook) and Ghetto Superstar (eBook).
