To Kill a Mockingbird - Characters and Location

To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in the early 1930s, starting just after FDR was sworn in for his first term as President, and ending in 1935. It takes place in the imaginary city of Maycomb, in Maycomb County, Alabama. The Great Depression is in full force.

Maycomb is loosely based on Harper Lee's home town, Meridian, Alabama. Many of the characters are loosely based on actual people Ms Lee knew as a child.

The character list can be confusing, because some people are referred to by their full names, and some by only their first name (Miss Caroline). Here's the list, by alphabetically by last name, then alphabetically by first name.
