Book for May 2009 - Tai Pan

To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May, we'll be reading Tai-Pan by James Clavell.

Tai-Pan is a historical fiction novel set in Hong Kong, just as the English are creating the colony in the mid 1800's. It's loosely based on real people and real events. I've read this book many times, but only recently found the information about the real individuals and companies. I'll be sharing that with you.

You may remember James Clavell better for his TV miniseries Shogun, set in Japan in the early 1600's. Tai-Pan is just as broad and amazing, and introduces a lot of information about Chinese culture.

This is a bit longer book than we ususally read, so check out your copy, and start reading now!
